It is no surprise that Nintendo holds the crown in the handheld gaming console segment and beats its competitors by a huge margin. It is not the tech and hardware but the enormous library of games that are available to play, which gives them an edge over other player. If we compare the user experience, then hands down the title will go to Sony PlayStation, whereas Xbox don’t even qualify. But Sony’s AAA titles are more focused on a rich gaming experience that you enjoy in your leisure time. However, people who are always on the move and love to play games, they have two options either to go with mobile gaming or handheld console. Mobile gaming constitutes the major chunk of the market because you don’t need an additional device, just a power bank in case your cellphone juice runs out. On the other hand, there are people including the likes of me, who like AAA titles and to play such games on a portable handheld that have an excellent battery backup, Nintendo becomes the best bet. Although there is no presence of Nintendo officially in the Indian market, but still there so many consumers that import these devices at a hefty premium, which is a bit disappointing, considered how vast India is as a market. India has its unique challenges when it comes to attracting foreign manufacturers due to governance issues. But, probably the reason for Nintendo not vying India as its manufacturing hub as well as market could be for more than governance issues. The first is of price sensitivity. The prices of Nintendo games are similar to those of Xbox and Playstation games. It should not be a problematic factor because a lot of people do buy the games and when they have completed it they sell it to a third party, who can again resell it at a lower price. So, nobody needs to own the game indefinitely, unless they are a collector. It solves the problem from consumer end. Another major challenge is of piracy, and it not just India, it is global. And Nintendo takes it very seriously and it should be. Any original content creator or innovation must be rewarding for the ones who put their sweat and blood and countless hours of research and iteration to truly make a masterpiece. Making products aggressively competitive reduces piracy’s appeal, thus discouraging it. India’s growth story is at its inflection point considering the push towards manufacturing, most of the developed countries are actually saturated not just for Nintendo but for other giants as well. They have been there, done that, played those games. A start now in India will bear fruits in the long run. Apple understood it very well and its driving it sales in India as compared to a decade before. Even with all the over promise of A.I. there is not substantial output from it. So, the only way to go is still old school manufacturing. It will not only give a boost to Nintendo as a market, but it opens a vast opportunity for game developers to produce or at least replicate manga style comics into a full blown AAA titles, few worthy India’s indegnous comics are Supercommando Dhruva, Doga; a raj comics collection. A soul fulfilling experience for the gamer, a market for the Richie Rich, manufacturing for the one of the largest market and new refreshing AAA titles, seems like a gamers paradise only if Nintendo picks up the call.
