What would you choose to be if you had the chance? Hasn’t everyone asked this question at some point? Should you execute like a jack of all trades and master of none, or should you execute it like a polymath? To make the choice, the underlying difference must be known. When we discuss a jack of all trades and master of none, we are looking at a trait that is superficial in numerous fields without depth. On the contrary, a polymath has a wide horizon with actual depth or expertise in each of the fields. So how would you know whether someone is a jack of all trades or a polymath. The only way to know is the work in each respective field. Polymaths think non-linearly; what seems chaotic is systematic, making them unique. From outside it looks like scatter brain. Perhaps they create personalities to protect their intellectual property interests. Those who have done work in only one field and achieved mastery in that they could never grasp this, for them it would be beyond comprehension. We may think there may be a plethora of ideas, but the essential query to consider is: does it fall within your scope to comprehend the execution of various tasks? Maybe we don’t ask that question because it is above our pay grade, or maybe we don’t have such role models. The ones available only teach to master one skill, what they misunderstand is that when you master yourself, you can master numerous skills. I read this a long time ago, don’t remember where, but it said, “The fetish of a wise one is always to be judged as dumb.” I didn’t understand that as I was very young and probably it was written by a polymath, but then I got my skills and witnessed wonderful things. A few years back I read a book that made me a believer of the above quote, it was a hilarious rip-off where words such as phalguni were changed to bunny. At that point I realised the beauty of words from a polymath. So next time when you look at multiple ideas don’t get afraid and label as jack of all trades, the ones that are dealing with those, they know exactly what needs to be done, keep enjoying the show.
